About the game
Final Fantasy Tactics 2A (FFTA2) and all its related terms, images, and products belong to the Square Enix Company. The contents of this Wiki Guide is for personal use only.
Story
Basically, it's a strategy RPG similar to Fire Emblem and FFT. The main character is a boy who got teleported to a fantasy world called Ivalice. In Ivalice, he joined a "clan", which is pretty much like a private just-pay-me-and-I-will-do-anything organization. The clans get requests from the bartender at the pub, finish it, and return for reward.
The whole FFTA2 evolves around a main story line. Those are the fixed quests that need to be cleared should you want to see the endings. There are totally 20 of them.
Along with the main story you'll also be able to participate in a bunch of side stories, which are the actual charm of the FFTA series. In the side stories you'll need to fulfill the requests of many interesting people.
Your team
Let's start from having a look at your team. In FFTA2, you have control over a group of team members. You can deploy them in battles or to missions. There are multiple races, and each of them can work as a series of jobs. According to your preference you can design your own troop.
Abilities
Each job comes with a specific set of starting skills. There are basically three types of skills:
| Action ability: |
Skills that need explicit command to be executed. For example, Fire magic of black mage is under Action skills "Black Magic", Speed break of Soldier is under Action skills "Battle Skills". Each member have one set job-specific Action skills, and one set of optional action skills |
| Reaction ability: |
Skills that need certain condition to be executed. For example, Counter (fight back when attacked by adjacent unit), Magic Counter (fight back with the same magic when attacked by magic). Each member can have one Reaction skill |
| Supportive ability: |
Skills that are always active at the background. For example: Avoid traps of Ranger, Magic Turbo of White mage. Each member can have one Supportive skill |
Skills, AP, and EXP
Each of these skills can be learned by equipping the right equipment. Once you have equipped the right weapon or armor, you can use the skill right away, but you will lose it if you unequipped it instantly. However, if you join battle with that equipment on, you will acquire something called AP (Action Point). Each skill requires a certain AP to be memorized, once you have got that amount of AP, you can keep using the skills even the equipment is taken away.
On top of AP, you also earn EXP (Experience Point) after each battle. When your character have earned enough EXP, they level up. Maximal level is 99. Statistics such as physical/magical attack/defense, as well as max. HP and MP increase according to job. Such increase is permanent and will not be adjusted later if you change job. So, bear in mind when balancing or specifying their statistics growth.
Notice that only party members who fought in the battle would get both EXP and AP. Reserved members only get AP. This is also a nice way to only learn skill and avoid unsatisfactory statistics gain.
Equipment
Equipment is this FFTA2 is mostly developed through the item shop. Throughout the quest you will obtain some ingredients, which you can use to create equipment. Once created, it can be bought at the shop. According to the rarity of the equipment, you may buy multiple sets of them, or as many as you have forged.
Recruitment
There are a set of fixed story-related members. And you can also recruit generic team members through randomly meeting them on the map or quest (人材紹介所, Rank 1, recurrent).
Your clan
At the beginning of the game, you can name your clan. The main character's clan is formally owned by Cid, who would fight along with you.
Quest
As a clan member, you can accept quests from the bartender in any town for a trivial amount of fee. Most of the quest will expire in 20 days. A day is passed if you (i) cross the border of any region, including taking air ship, or (ii) carry out a quest. So, do not take too many than you can manage.
On the quest menu, you can press L or R of the direction button to browse through the contents. You'll be able to see (i) if the quest needs any item to start, (ii) what is the reward, (iii) where it is happening, and (iv) how many members are needed. If four or six members are needed, it's usually a battle quest. If only one is needed, it's often a dispatching quest, where no battle is needed.
New quests are unlocked on various conditions: (i) Clearing a main story quest usually unlock a set of new side quests; (ii) Side quests themselves also come in a series (e.g. Arrest order 1 through 12), the next one will not appear until the current one is cleared; (iii) reading the rumors and publications at the pub also unlock some new quests.
On top of that, most quests are one-time and will not appear again once you have cleared it. Another good proportion of them are recurrent quests, which will appear again even you've done it before.
After each quest, your members will earn AP and EXP, and your clan will earn CP (Clan Point) that is very useful in the following sections: clan trial and auction.
Clan Trial
In the bar you can also apply for clan trial. Clan trials grant you different bonus to your clan ability and other goodies such as discount in shop and pub. Clan abilities can also be obtained through trials.
Auction
Auction is not available at the beginning of the game, it's unlocked after a few main quests. Upon arriving each town, you can choose to either visit the pub, the shop, or join an auction. Each year, there would be 20 days in which you can join an auction. Each town governs a number of regions, on which you an other competitors can bid. You have a set of 1-token, 2-token, and 3-token at the beginning.
The auction works like this:
To join, just pay 20 CP. Then you can bid and try to win the region. The goal is to get the highest bid in all the area so that you can become "Region King"
1. At the beginning, you can choose if you wish to bid on an area or not, choose yes.
2. Then start bidding, it's a real time auction and you have to decide how much to bid before the time gauge reaches each tick mark.
3. Y button bids 1 token, B button bids 2 tokens, A button bids 3 tokens. And you also have a special X button for 5 tokens. At the beginning, you only have some 1,2, and 3 tokens in your hands. To get 5-token, you either (i) have to win the bonus in some tick marks along the time gauge, or (ii) level up enough in playing auction so that token selling function is available at the front desk
4. For now let's forget the token selling, you'll get it later. Come back to the bidding process.
First, you have to bid either 0, 1, 2, or 3 to start. Your opponents will also bid against you. If you look at their action, it actually tells how much they want to bid:
| Action |
Meaning |
| With a conversation bubble showing a ball of lines |
Still thinking, no information yet |
| Shaking head |
0 token |
| Stand still |
1 token |
| Walking slowly |
2 tokens |
| Dashing forward |
3 tokens |
| With a "!" conversation bubble |
5 tokens |
Keep bidding and keep your leading position, and you should be able to win an area.
5. Time to time, you'll see some position listed with the tick marks (like 1st, 3rd), that means you'll get a bonus 5-token if you are at that position after that bid. Say... the upcoming tick mark has a "2nd" on it, and you have bid totally 6, and your opponent has also 6, from the gesture you know that he is going to bid 1 token. What you can do is not to bid (press R or do nothing), so that after that tick mark, you'll be at 2nd and fetch the bonus 5-token.
6. Once you have conquered all areas in the same region, you'll become Region King and next time you'll be able to unlock a special auction, in which you don't bid on area anymore, but equipment. You can get some very nice weapons (which can not be stolen in this FFTA) in those auction.
7. Save before each auction, if failed, reload and try again.
8. You will also level up according to various actions you have done. For example, if you used 1-token frequently enough, you can level up and get a bonus token next time. As time goes on, you can even unlock token sale, from which you can buy tokens before the auction with CP!
